Decentralised Solid Waste Management (DESWAM)

Decentralised management of solid waste is increasingly recognized as critical and complimentary for centralized systems. CDD Network partners develop integrated, demand responsive, community based approach for solid waste management maximizing benefit for the beneficiary community.

DESWAM is mainly aimed at providing a clean environment as well as hygienic living conditions for a community. Hence, those projects run most sustainably, effectively and economically with a participatory approach, e.g. informed selection of appropriate technical options.

DESWAM approach focuses on three aspects

The quantity of waste that has to be handled onsite, which in turn entails less transportation, dumping efforts and expenditures .

The organic material, e.g. to eco-friendly fertilizer by providing compost facilities or to biogas by the implementation of anaerobic digestion plants.

The byproducts either by own consumption (biogas for lighting and cooking or manure for gardening or agriculture) or by retail to generate additional income, which also makes the benefit of DESWAM valid and quantifiable.

Therefore, it is important to consider requirements towards waste fraction segregation, suitable treatment of the different fractions and implementation of waste collection systems which ensure separate handling or disposal of remaining non-hazardous waste in an ecologically acceptable manner.
